Full Version: John Carpenter to do "The Thing" Sequel

Apparently it's off the planning boards and into pre production (and am l ever excited, being apparently one of the few people to see his remake at the movies).

For people not paying attention ....

John Campbell wrote "Who Goes There" as a novella. Some one made a dodgy 50s Sci Fi movie out of it, (giant carrot from outer space eats stoopid forward defense workers in the Antartic .. actually the Doctor would no doubt have dug that one). Big John did a remake in the 80s, and added a whole heap of special effects and horror to it, said giant carrot can now mimic anything it comes into contact with).

At the end of the remake we have Kurt and some other guy swapping swing of whisky in the burnt out shell of their research station. Where to from here unsure.gif

Look forward to it !!

The Thing is probably my favourite film ever, the 50s version is very atmospheric too. Jethro, John Carpenter said that he had filmed an alternative ending to The Thing and I have seen a pic of it where Kurt's character is picked up by resuers and taken back to a military base where he is interegated, so maybe the sequel could kick off from there. Hope he has a big budget to realise his plans for this one.

And lets hope he learns a few more 'chords' for the soundtrack !!

Sorry to be 'fussy' here Vanner but JC didn't do the music for The Thing. It does sound like his stuff but it was actually done by Ennio Morricone who did Good, Bad and Ugly soundtrack. Maybe JC should do the music hey? wink.gif

Hmmmmm, I didn't actually know that I just assumed it was him, but :-

Those who are familiar with John Carpenter's style of music will recognize his influence on the album. Ennio Morricone was commissioned to produce the soundtrack. However Carpenter influenced several tracks with his own preferred style of repeating techno-synthesised music. This is especially evident in the Humanity Part II track played during the norwegian helicopter chase and throughout the movie.

The final soundtrack is essentially the result of both men. Ennio Morricone was reported as being "unhappy" with the influence that Carpenter had on the soundtrack and its application in the movie.

The following excerpt is from an interview with Morricone published by Fangoria Magazine.

"Carpenter flew to Rome and showed me his film," Morricone says. "He was very insistent, and I liked his movie, so I decided to do it."

"The only thing is though, we barely talked about what he had in mind."

"When I flew to Los Angeles to record the score, I brought along a tape that contained some synthesizer music I had recorded here in Italy."

"It was really difficult for me to understand what kind of score he wanted, so I composed an array of totally different things, hoping he'd find something of particular interest to him."

"Now I've been in this business for 30 years," says Morricone, "and I think I know what my clients want, and guess what? He (Carpenter) picked the piece which mostly resembled his own personal compositions. That is, of course, the main theme, which can be heard throughout the movie."

Confirmation of this claim comes from the film's soundtrack, which contains a great deal of music which never made it into the movie. The main theme is virtually the sole composition heard during the film, and collectors consider the album "a rather peculiar one" as a result.

"I wrote an hour of music for 'The Thing,' and I just can't believe the way it was ignored," frowns Morricone. "So when they asked me what to put on the album, I recovered all the stuff we had previously recorded."

"You can't sell a soundtrack album with only one theme: its like cheating your potential buyers!"

I still maintain he should learn a few more 'chords' !! thumbup1.gif

After reading your most informative post Vanner, I agree that Carpenter should indeed be buying a synthesizer with a wider keyboard. I do like his style though! smile.gif
vanner
Oh yeah, I also like his style but as you say, he could do with a wider keyboard.

Perhaps he's only got one of those little Casio things tongue.gif rolleyes.gif laugh.gif
Eckie
Or perhaps he could use more then one finger on the keys whilst he plays. Alan Howarth should help him out again!
Jethro
Tsk, let JC lose on this one with a big budget and we have a winner on our hands imho smile.gif
