once I read a short story called(I think!) Birthdays it was set on a colony type ship run by a computer that awakened one boy one day every year to check on test tube babies being raised by the computer. Anyone read this and know who wrote it or what short story collection it may be in?

Sounds a little like the Exiles trilogy. I'll have to trawl through my shelves tonight for the author. Enjoyable yarn with a nonsensical ending.

Not exiles trilogy, I have that one (good too!) I am almost sure it was in a collection of short stories but just can't find it again. Will keep banging my head against the wall, could help!

Your right you know. The Exiles was by Ben Bova (stupid ending . That's the problem when you've been reading SF/Fantasy almost exclusively for the past 30 years and have (probably) a couple of thousand tomes on your walls to trawl through..
