The Doctor
This is good news! I wonder who will play the Doctor? biggrin.gif

QUOTE
Doctor Who is coming back to BBC One in 2005. It will be a new live-action series, written by Russell T Davies.

Lorraine Heggessey, Controller of BBC One, has confirmed that all rights issues regarding Doctor Who have been resolved and has green-lit scripts from writer Russell T Davies.

The statement notes that it is far too early in the day to discuss possible storylines, characters, villains or who might play the Doctor. It also states that it is unlikely anything will be on screen for at least two years.

It will be a family show, but no details are available on when it will be scheduled.

Doctor Who will be produced by BBC Wales in conjunction with Mal Young, Controller of BBC Continuing Series. The executive producers will be Mal Young, Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner, Head of Drama BBC Wales. Russell T. Davies's writing credits include Bob and Rose, Queer as Folk, The Second Coming, Touching Evil (with Paul Abbott) and The Grand.

Mal Young says: "Doctor Who is a much-loved, truly iconic piece of television history. It's time to crank up the TARDIS and find out what lies in store for the Doctor. We're thrilled to have a writer of Russell's calibre to take us on this journey. However, we're at the very early stages of development and further details, including casting, will not be available for some time."

Award-winning writer Russell T. Davies says: "I grew up watching Doctor Who, hiding behind the sofa like so many others. Doctor Who is one of the BBC's most exciting and original characters. He's had a good rest and now it's time to bring him back!

"The new series will be fun, exciting, contemporary and scary. Although I'm only in the early stages of development, I'm aiming to write a full-blooded drama which embraces the Doctor Who heritage, at the same time as introducing the character to a modern audience."

A report in the Telegraph mentions that six episodes have been commissioned, but there is no information on this in the BBC statement.

A BBCi animated series starring Richard E Grant as the Doctor launches to celebrate the show's 40th anniversary. His adventures will keep you entertained while you're waiting for the new TV series to arrive.

Sounds like interesting news........ I read in last weeks Sunday Times that the actor who played an MP from the last series of Auf Wiedersein Pet (can't remember his name!) is up for the part. He would be good I think
Moog
There's a really wacky auctioneer on Bargain Hunt - he would be PERFECT, but I don't know his name sad.gif . Will find out smile.gif .

He's not on all the time and has the catchphrase 'fair warning' ! Wears a dickie bow - just in case any of you know who I mean.
Dax
he actually looks like the doctor in star trek enterprise...dr. flox, he has this amazing wide grin, cant for the life of me remember his name
Dax

Rupert Toovey - you beat me to it!

But do you agree?? tongue.gif

I think there was rumour about Eddie Izzard, wasn't there? Or was I just dreaming? (probably) dry.gif
Eckie
Yes Moog, there was talk a couple of years ago about Eddy Izzard being the next Doc, could be the first gayish Doctor! If so then perhaps Star Trek should hit back and have their gay Captain shout 'set your phasers to stunning' biggrin.gif wink.gif
I think they should have a rastafarian Doctor, he could still have his scarf but in red gold and green. A top hat perhaps with a long coat and when he needed to think out a problem he could light up his rolly. Hey he could even share it out like he did with jelly babies, what you think?
Dana_Scully
I think it's about time there was a female doctor rolleyes.gif Can't think who. Oops, get it? Can't think WHO? Sorry.

Maybe Alex Kingston, here out of ER.

Lets hope the Beeb bring it back without all the jokeyness and silly comedian guest stars that ruined the last few years of the series. I think they will have aim it at adults too, it was never produced by the childrens dept, so why treat it as if it was? Lets have some clever and sometimes frightening stories wacko.gif
Dax
at the end of Dr Who last night (UK Gold) they tried to explain what had gone wrong with the last two doctors

scripts were bad, it was put on at the same time as corrie and it was a bit like a panto

Colin Bakers doctor was deemed to violant! watching yesturday he was actually, the doc shouldnt of beat people up......!! and he did........ lots

they blamed a lot of people for many things it seems

even the doctor who appraiction society said it was just a bloke running up and down corridors at one point!
Eckie
Yes, Dr Whos problem has always been to have to spread the story over 4 or 6 episodes with a cliffhanger every 30 mins, this has contributed to episodes involving people running around corridors and being captured, escaping, being captured by the other side, escaping.......... the program needs some clever and skillfull writers to succeed.
Dax
well what I saw this weekend I rather enjoyed!

not just the Docs, but the little snippets of info in the middle of the programmes.

some bloke I know said today he is sure that he heard Dawn French is going to play the next Doc, and Richard E Grant isnt going to play him till 2005, there again this chap is not even a sci fi fan of any describtion, so not entirely convinced with his knowledge!
