I've joined the forum Ogre but I have a confession - I'm not a survivalist. 
I find the survivalist belief (what little I know) VERY uncomfortable. Having thought about it I think I feel that way because although it could be viewed as paranoid, it is actually a cold, harsh reality that could happen anytime. It's such a huge fact to take in that I think that many people, myself included, prefer to avoid the subject rather than embrace what 'could be' and therefore what needs to be done.
The forum looks great by the way and I look forward to reading the posts on there - particularly interested in the 'defence' aspect. To a degree it is relevant to many people already.

I must admit it's something that scares the blue funk out of me as well. Not sure about paranoia in the real sense. With me it's a case of 'I'd rather look back in 10 years and think "wottadick!!", than look back in 10 years and think "If only I'd". How about we scrap the phrase 'Survivalism' and the mental images of rednecked misanthropes called Bubba, waving a semi automatic right atcha. And use the phrase 'preparedness' instead. Take the mental image of someone who's thought about where we seem to be headed, taken a look at our infrastructure and leaders and decided to quietly make their own preperations.
As I put stuff away into sealable plastic boxes I somethimes think "I'm off my head". Then I read the papers or catch the news.... (where's the smiliey for "shudder") It is a plunge to take, but I found starting off with little steps helped. I bought a garden water butt in a sale. Then another, then as each payday came around i'd add something small (has to be small as I'm kitting 3 people). It's just that first step.
Also, if nothing else, having the right mindset could probably help. I see your interested in the defence aspect. Pop in as often as you feel comfortable, right now the thread on Solar Power seems to be the rage, and nothing about 'keeping damn city folk ofn the crops'
