Terry Prachett...what do you reckon?

I have now got at least 10 books he has written, when I first was lent a TP book I thought WOW, how great is this, then as I kept reading I thought, hang on a mo, isnt this just like the last book I read?

I much prefer his kids stories, they seem fresher than the disc world books.

the disc world ones are good, but every one is so similar to the last its a little bit like being conned into buying a new book which isnt actually new.

My favorite has to be the carpet people, and only you can save man kind, these however are kids books!

I must admit, I do like the plays of his books, the wyrd sisters is quite good, and some of his disc world books have been made into animations.

for anyone whos interested, the world is flat and its carried across space on the back of 4 elephants who stand on the back of the giant turtle, the great A'Tuin.

needles to say, if you travel to far across the world, you fall off!!!

I've only read one TP book and that was sort of by accident. Daughter left it in the loo and it provided reading for...well you know wink.gif But I enjoyed it even though there was very little story to it. I enjoyed the humour. I think it was called 'Rights of Passage' or something like that. It was about a little girl who was born to be a wizard.

I've been saying I will read these books for years but I still haven't gotten round to it.
The Doctor
I've tried reading a TP book, but just briefly.....maybe I'll have another go.....what would you reccommend as a first starter Dax? biggrin.gif
Dax
well, the first book he wrote was the carpet people, about people who live in your carpet! what else!

after you read it you will be reluctant to vacum for some time!

maurice and his educated Rodents is great, about a cat with trained rodents, who set up a piped piper thing where no one ever gets hurt!

the discworld books are different,
QUOTE
The Discworld Books:
It's a series, not a serial. Even so...

...well, it's like this. If you started watching Star Trek halfway through the series you probably wondered why one guy had pointy ears. But since you liked what you saw, you probably let the question ride for now and just got on with enjoying the show.

so you can start anywhere and go back to read the others. it all still makes sense.....sorta!!

TP books

here is a site which lists a lot of his books, and gives you a tiny clue what they are about.

if you are going to start with a disc world book, I think you should read a thin one first! laugh.gif

TP is great!

I love the characterisations in the book - very funny. He develops them over the course of a few books, so you always find out something new about them.

He is fantastic!!!!!

Although I love the Discworld novels!!! (I have all of them except the new one out!!!)

I could never get into the Carpet people or Truckers!!!.......I found them boring!!!
I have to agree with the master that some of the DW books seem to have to same story line but I think that is only with the Watch ones....although I hav found some of the Wizzard ones a bit pradictable!!!!

I just think he has such a dry sense of humour "the big bang theory!!".....lol......and I love all the witches ones, they are the only ones that are different every time..........I think my fav is either The WeeFree men or Carpe Jugulum!

p.s. that book where the girl tries to become a wizzard is called 'Equal Rites'
The Master
The new one?!!?

What, where, how .....

I must pay a visit to the bookshop methinks.

The Master
Magenta
Well the newest ones are The WeeFree men, Nightwatch and Maurice but there is another new one out.....it's another Watch one!!!........I can't remember what it is called tho!!!! mad.gif
Dax
night watch and maurice are quite old now, check out the link above that might help!

maurice and his amazing rodents is so funny!

I think his books are ok, not great but entertaining. I went to an all day celebration last year of the life and works Father Lional Franthorpe(not sure of the spelling) of Fotean TV fame. TP was the last speaker and he was very entertaining, great story teller. He mixed with everyone on the breaks and was very approachable. Unfortunatly I didn't get a chance to chat but did have a couple of words with the editor of Fortean Times. Colin Wilson was very good too!
Magenta
The new one is called The Monsters Regiment I think.......or something like that!!!......Is that right?????

I'm just finishing the Nightwatch now.....it's good so far but it's all in the ending in my opinion!!!!....if the ending is crap then it rewins the whole book!!!!....lol

I must admit I found his first Diskworld Book (The Colour of Magic) to be derivative crap. A pastiche along the lines of Bored of The Rings. But he does seem to have gone from strength to strength. Although Rincewind (the Coward Eternal) and the Luggage seem to have been dropped, he takes the most unlikely characters and makes you care for them. Where else would you find yourself worrying about Death or the Chief of Police ?

I also like the fact that a lot of the stories are two interwoven tales. One side is high comedy and the other a poignant tragedy. Look at Reaperman and see what I mean.

I have to say though I don't like The Monsterous Regiment (latest ??) you can spot the running gag by Chapter Two and by the end of the book you just want to get it over with. Although a Vampire on Coffe withdrawal suffering 'NAM' flashbacks was a nice touch.

He's such a prolific (spelling?) writer I constantly worry he's going to turn into a Dean Koontz, where you always know when the rents due. (Ooops - time to knock out a new potboiler, where do I keep my plot dice)

I have Soul Musc & Weird Sisters on tape and their amuzing, but if you get a chance to see a Staged version DO SO !!!!! Saw Guard Guards in Swansea a few years back and it was pure Joy. thumbup1.gif

I'm also young enough (at heart) to have enjoyed his 'Childrens' Books. (Actually dear the Carpet People is a valid insight in to decadant decay of many ancient civilisations - cough)

Here's to the next novel. Lets hope the rents not due

Morbius
One of two early sci-fi books he wrote, Strata contains a Proto-discworld which was actually constructed - on which the inhabitants are basically reliving the dark ages of Europe. Quite amusing when the Vikings who discovered Vinland here, on attempting to reach it there sail off the edge of the disc. tongue.gif

I'd never heard of Terry Pratchett until I was asked to play Death in the stage adaptation of Mort. I went and read the book to see what it was all about and get some idea of the character, and I thought it was great! As soon as I'd read it I went out and bought all the others. My favourite stories are the ones that involve the Watch.

Hi all . I am an avid TP fan and having just read THUD his latest he has managed to evolve the Dwarfs, there is some correlation to outsiders living in big cities and how they behave think of thenselves and although social sciences grade 1 he makes the point quite well, albeit using a bludgeon

still had me laughing in bits especially the watch ...coppering bits....
