I was avoiding this like the plague, until I realised that it was made by the same people who did Dog Soldiers and Descent. In fact a few of the actors from those films appear, giving it a certain Adam Sandler & Mates feel to the whole thing.
The story rotates around a Plague that breaks out in Scotland. The Government respond by sealing Scotland off from the rest of the UK. Years later it surfaces further South. However, Survivors have been seen North of the Border. A team is assembled and sent North to get the cure and save the Powers That Be...
Ok, reasonable yarn, some interesting sub plots. (The organisation needed to de-mothball a steam train and get it running again.) People spurning anything modern and going back to a Medieval existence (complete with a Gladiatorial Justice system).
However, the thing that really let me down, was the horde of refugees from Mad Max 2 & 3. I can buy the ritual canibalism (a way of binding people closer to you) I found it difficult to accept the 'Psycho' Society element. (Service your car ? Too busy engaging in mindless violence Guv). But the thing that really wiped it out for me was the car chases... Petrol starts to lose it's value as a fuel after approx 30 days. Even with a fuel extender like Sta-Bil you can only keep it as a fuel for 2 years. But after 2 decades ????
Ok, so I was having a 'Helms Deep Moment'. I still only recommend it as a no brainer popcorn jobbie.
